4 Stars I love grannies
I’m rewriting this review entirely because at first glance I was unimpressed but after some usage I have decided I do like the book quite a bit. Items include a very open granny poncho, cute hat with braids which can be deleted, very attractive scarf with 12 grannies in one line, ugly skirt in orange and green, bright baby blankie, evening bag, girl’s bolero, capelet with grannies at the bottom, pillow (on cover), shrug in Noro Kureyon, tote bag, summer sun hat in cotton, circle bag, another baby blankie in one variegated color, pendant, rings, rectangle tote, cropped cardigan with grannies on one color and trim in a second, Amish afghan which is one huge granny. My favorites are the hats, scarf, bolero and baby blankies but the shrug interests me if I change it to have a front as well. The patterns are all easy or intermediate with one exception and the yarns are also reasonably priced. REcommended.

In today’s job market, few people have traditional or conventional career paths. Research shows that the average worker will change jobs every two or three years, and will have three significant career changes during the course of his or her working life. Personal situations can complicate the mix.

 Here’s a book that tackles head-on those resume-writing challenges that may seem like insurmountable obstacles to job seekers with non-traditional backgrounds. In Resumes for the Rest of Us, veteran resume writer Arnold Boldt shares his professional knowledge and experience to help you prepare a resume that will effectively and positively capture the attention of your targeted employers–even if you have an unconventional work history.

 Opening with a complete and easy-to-understand review of the resume-writing process, the first four chapters cover:
* Organizing your personal information.
* Developing a winning strategy for your resume.
* Writing and designing the resume to target specific audiences.
* Ensuring your resume is compatible with today’s technology.

Beginning with Chapter Five, specific and proven advice is offered to job seekers in a broad array of categories, such as:
* Return-to-work moms.
* People with gaps in their work histories.
* “Blue collar” workers.
* Young-at-heart retirees pursuing new careers.
* Ex-offenders.
* Recent immigrants.
* The formerly self-employed.
* Career changers.
* Managers without college degrees.
* Ex-military personnel.
* Personal assistants, nannies, and other domestic workers.

Sample resumes prepared by leading resume-writers and career consultants illustrate how to address problem areas and make your resume shine.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Full of references for young people
Good book, a lot of references, but mainly for young people just out from college.

5 Stars This works for Americans too!
Although you might be able to find some of this info on the internet, it would take years. The guy who wrote the last review missed the mark. While the roots of this book are Canadian, I found that more than three quarters of its 1,600 pages are applicable to Americans and well worth the investment when compared to what else is available in the US.

For example The BIG Guide has the largest available list profiling US NGOs (with more than 400) and more than 300 US private sector firms which regularly hire for international positions. These organizations are indexed in the book and their carefully written profiles are located on the CD-ROM.

…another gem of The BIG Guide is its professional career building advice, offering un-paralleled expertise when compared with other US publications, —my favourite chapters are on international job hunting (international resumes etc) and the skills about living overseas — forty one chapters in all. No publication does international careers better than this guide.

I used an earlier version of this guide and I have recommended it to many people over the years and they all have been thrilled.

4 Stars It’s a BIG guide
This guide does cover many, if not, all the major aspects of living and working overseas, mainly from an American / Canadian point of view.

There is a lot of information packed into ~3 pounds of paper (it IS heavy). There are many handy tips and practical tips, especially for first-timers looking to live and work overseas. But a lot of it can be obtained elsewhere (e.g. from the net). Overall, I would say, if you are after an all-in-one guide / reference book, this is by far the most comprehensive guide in print form I’ve come across on the market for the American / Canadian market.

The key additions to the 4th edition comes in “soft-copy” in a CD-Rom - the printed version remains more or less the same. I found the previous editions sufficiently adequate - unless you are looking for something specific that wasn’t covered in the previous editions.

3 Stars Good….if you’re Canadian
This book has a lot of information but I’ve pretty much seen everything in here just by searching online.

AND the sucky part about this book is that it’s geared for Canadians. Tons of the organizations are Canadian organizations that only recruit Canadians.

SO, this book is OK but you can basically just search the internet for international jobs and NGOs to find the info you want. Nothing innovative really.

5 Stars The best and most concise guide to getting the job you want.
I discovered Max 15 years ago at a recruitment fair where he gave a free presentation on CV writing. I was already so impressed that I kept detailed notes (which I have and refer to, to this day). My next encounter was face-to-face, where I asked his advice on career planning. I followed his advice, as a result of which I have lived (literally) a dream lifestyle ever since. As I write I am in Hong Kong, having made lots more money than I could ever imagine, my success largely fuelled by having done a wide range of jobs that were exactly what I wanted to do at the time, for the money that I wanted to be paid.

The book is very short. Much shorter than my own writing! That is because it give very clear and specific advice without beating around the bush. If you follow the steps he gives, you will find that a) you are much more clear about what you are offering and b) everyone around you is much more clear about your true potential.

I am now working as an executive recruiter, and I really really wish more candidates had read Max’s book. Any book for that matter, but I always recommend Perfect CV. It is SO hard to work out what a candidate is capable of, by reading the typical CV that is piled up on my desk.

If you’re looking for work, please please do yourself and your potential recruiters a favour by reading Perfect CV.

(Max, if you see this: “thanks!”)

5 Stars I can’t believe I’m the first person to review this book
I own 3 other books on resume-writing that got good reviews on Amazon.com, but they never got me an interview. “Amazing Resumes”, however, made resume-writing really simple, and even enjoyable. The authors, Bright & Earl, don’t assume you have 30 years of experience or a college degree, even if you do. It’s designed for anybody to use, even a 16-year old looking for his or her first part-time after-school job. They help you play up what you have under your belt, and tailor each resume to each job you’re applying for. It’s an awesome book. And there’s not a lot to read, either. The authors get straight to the point. I got 3 interviews just last week by using this book as my guide. I hope this review puts “Amazing Resumes” on Amazon’s radar.

5 Stars Detailed, Fun, and Motivating
I love this book! It got me thinking about my resume again in ways I never had before. The information is very current and fun to read. There are several detailed, step-by-step instructions that are quite easy to adapt and plenty of examples. Several before-and-after critiques as well. Both my girlfriend and I have used this book with a lot of success. Definitely worth a purchase!

This guide shows you what you must know and do to get a good federal job-with health insurance, retirement benefits, and a stable future. Inside this book, find how to translate your work experience and education into federal employment. Discover where to aim with the 10 hottest federal fields. Effectively present specialized experience, as needed. Expand your short private industry resume into a typical 4-page USAJOBS federal resume. Determine and use the right words that federal hiring authorities look for. Break the code on difficult KSAs and challenging self-assessment questionnaires

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars The bible of Federal job-hunting
Landing a Federal job is tricky and time-consuming, but well worth the effort in this economy. The process of applying is so different than the private sector process that one would be lost without a guide like this. Written by the acknowledged leader in the field, it’s the perfect guide for the first-time Federal job seeker. I’ve used it myself, and it works.

5 Stars Ten Steps is an EXCELLENT How to Book
I would strongly recommend “Ten Steps to a Federal Job” by author Kathryn Troutman. The techniques she explains to include: keyword analysis of vacancy announcements, outline format of Government resume, and method for constructing KSA’s was extremely valuable. I also found the CD (which is included with the book) a huge help in providing a template by which to craft my professional experience and transferable skills. I would also like to share that taking her one day workshop will give you a big advantage as she shares tips and advice that are extremely helpful, and not available anywhere else either online or print.

5 Stars Indispensable
I purchased this book some time ago and am just now jumping in with both feet. Troutman’s book has gone a very long way toward demystifying the process. She gives great examples and, as far as I can tell, she’s right on the money in her understanding of navigating the federal system. For example, she hammers home the importance of writing really good KSAs (short essays regarding knowledge, skills, and abilities). I stopped by my local USDA office to get some real world input about the application process. Almost the first thing out of the office administrator’s mouth was how important KSAs are. He basically said good KSAs are what keep a resume out of the circular file. Troutman not only beat him to the punch, she also gave me the format to use that makes me look like I’m an old hand at this. In short, I highly recommend her book to anyone seriously considering jumping with even one foot.

5 Stars TENS STEPS YOU MUST LEARN
My first contact with Kathryn Troutman was a free workshop at the public library. After attending this workshop I attended her one day workshop and purchased the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in landing a federal job. I work with students and clients and I use this book as a resource. Most people are way off on how to navigate the process. This book brings it all together, down to important information about searching on USAJobs.gov. Have you ever typed in a job title and entered your city and hoped the perfect job appeared? Well, once you purchase this book, you’ll learn that’s not the most effective way to search for the ideal position. You’ll also learn which agencies aren’t required to post their jobs on USAjobs.gov and where to find them.

From great samples of resumes, KSA’s, and most importantly follow up tips, this book is a must have. There are actually scripts on what to say when you call to follow up on your application. And who and who to write when you have not been selected for a position - how valuable is that information? You thought you were a PERFECT match, yet you were not selected. Find out why and where you went wrong. This book literally takes you through 10 Steps to Land a Federal Job.

Simply a Win Win!

5 Stars Truly Indispensible
Ms. Troutman has written several outstanding books on the federal job application process including “Federal Resume Guidebook” and “Ten Steps to a Federal Job”. Her new book “Ten Steps to a Federal Job: How to Land a Job in the Obama Administration” follows in their footsteps as a superb new volume that addresses the rigors of applying for federal employment in the current job market and on the current USAJobs website.

The overall approach, including instructions and recommendations, made an incredible difference in my application. One can glean much of the salient material quickly, which was important to me since I was under some time pressure. The book is full of useful and illustrative examples that make the techniques easy to apply.

I cannot believe how much better my application is after using this book. Like night and day.
