User Ratings and Reviews
5 Stars Practical Advice
I found the book to be very informative. It has many excellent examples of how young job seekers should prepare for interviews and the job search. The examples provided are real and to the point. The reader can easily adapt and improve their own cover letters, resumes, and interview answers based on the pertinent stories provided by the author.
The author also provides many examples of what to avoid during the job search process. He warns job seekers of habits or approaches that remove them from job consideration even before the process begins. What a great thing to know for young graduates who have yet to hire or be part of the hiring and interview process.
5 Stars Beyond useful and surprising
I’m a 19-year-old humanities major and I’m employed: why? Polished: basically the point of the book is to show “first time job seekers” (a very nice word for people who have no experience) how to turn what little you’ve done into an effective and alluring job application.
As importantly, it talks about what not to do: the author is some kind of recruiter, so a good portion is spent running through a list of secret things that cause them to throw out your materials. Trust me, you wouldn’t think of them.
Give it a read, it worked for me!
5 Stars Effective text on job applications
Polished was a surprising take on how to navigate the job application process. As a college student I found it quite readable and directly relevant. The “examples of what not to do” sections are funny, memorable, and effective.
I now know how application readers think when they assess a candidate.
